You do not need to prepare a perfect story

A first session is usually an opportunity to get to know one another. Your therapist may ask what brought you to therapy, what support you have had before and what you hope to work toward. It is okay to say you are not sure where to begin.

Practical questions are welcome

Ask about confidentiality and its limits, session length, fees, cancellation policies and how to contact the practice between appointments. For online appointments, ask about privacy, technology and what happens if a connection drops.

Notice how the conversation feels

You do not have to share everything immediately. You can ask for clarification, name an uncomfortable moment or request a slower pace. You and your therapist can discuss next steps together, including whether another type of support would be more appropriate.

This guide is for general information, not medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Individual needs vary. Speak with a qualified professional about your own situation.
